Abstract

In this paper we present a patchwork art installation with the overarching purpose of achieving a common goal to conference visitors: participation beyond design through inclusion and commitment. The patchwork is based on the self-regulation strategy of mental contrasting, which consists of fantasizing about an ideal future and then contrasting it with the obstacles that may stand in the way. This strategy increases commitment and leads to goal achievement. The activity allows all participants to work together on a common goal which results in a colorful patchwork for others to interact with and re-think participatory design in an era of participation.
